Phone numbers can be used to locate an area within Russia. However, the system is rather complex. In general, phone numbers consist of 10 digits. However, extensions consisting of the last 5, 6, or 7 digits are also valid. Often, regional phone numbers are listed only by their extension.
By the first 3 digits of a phone number, one can identify the region. A map, coloured based on the first digits of a phone number, is shown below. Note that some prefixes are reserved for national numbers. For calling between regions, an 8 may be placed before the area code.
